The making of the brand new film 20th Century Girl is interesting to say the least and we are going to tell you all about it!
In an interview, director Bang Woo Ri gave the public some insight on the creative process of the film.
She revealed the film was all about her own life experiences, with emphasis on young love and female friendship.
Woo Ri mentioned a particular personal experience when she talked about how she and her friend used to share a diary when they were younger.
In this diary, she primarily swooned over a boy she had a huge crush on during her school years.
This film was supposed to be a breath of fresh air in the genre of romantic comedies in Asia, with the center point being a teenage girl.
The goal, though, was for 20th Century Girl to develop into much more than just a cliché romantic comedy.
Woo Ri explained she wanted to teach people more about Korean culture and fashion, particularly from the 1990s.
To capture the nostalgic feel of the movie, the crew went through a lot. They had to use old devices such as camcorders and video tapes to film some of the scenes.
Many of these gadgets were outdated and needed fixing, so they were shipped overseas to get repaired.
Even the lighting in the movie was adjusted to match the old school vibe.
Woo Ri revealed that she was adamant in using saturated colors to portray the feeling of young love.
She also let the public know that she was scared the cast would not be able to fully grasp the old school vibe of the movie, but to her surprise they adapted very quickly.
This was mainly due to the new fashion trends that highlight fashion from the 90s.
Woo Ri made sure to drop this movie now, since stories from the past have been getting more and more recognition lately.
All actors did a great job portraying the authentic feeling of the film, but Han Hyo Joo took it a step further and filmed one of the scenes purely based on her own emotions.
At the end of the film, we witness an older Bora taking out a VHS box, where she discovers a video of her and Woon Ho making a promise to reconnect in the twenty-first century.
Of course, this scene made people cry a lot, but did you know actress Hyo Joo did not view the video in advance?
It is revealed that she acted purely based on her imagination!
In terms of emotions, Byeo Woo Seok went above and beyond to make his performance credible.
In the film, Woon Ho must eventually leave Bora because he is departing for New Zealand.
They say goodbye in an extremely emotional way and we watch him leave Bora at the railway station before boarding.
It turns out Woo Seok actually took that train and really went home.
This means they had only one shot at getting this scene right, since Woo Seok would not be coming back!
Filming seems to have been an emotional rollercoaster for the cast.
In one of the scenes, Woon Ho hides Bora in a storage space so that their teacher would not catch them drinking.

He and Kim Yoo Jung had to get quite close to each other because the room was so small. Woo Seok confessed in an Interview with Netflix that this made his heart flutter.
He is definitely not scared to speak his mind, because he also said he might have felt a little jealous when Park Jung Woo, who plays Hyunjin and Yoo Jung filmed a scene together!
It is safe to say the crew did everything to make this film look as authentic as possible.
