Kim Hee Won has given life to her own rendition of Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women and it is quite unique.
Loose Adaptation
For starters, it is important to note that the drama is only loosely based on the novel, despite the fact that both the novel and the drama share the same title.
Little Women‘s k-drama adaptation has taken on the challenge of changing up crucial story points while still retaining the charm of the original book.
Although the two stories have quite distinct plots, they both share some common elements.
Coming-of-age thriller?
Another difference is that the two renditions have different genres. The novel is a more heartfelt piece with coming of age elements, while the show is more of a thriller.
The first episode makes it clear that writer Seo Kyung made the decision to give the storyline a sinister twist, which undoubtedly makes you uneasy.
Modern Twist
The setting and period are also significant differences between the drama and the book.
The original plot takes place in the second half of the American Civil War, from 1863 to 1866. The March sisters live in Massachusetts in America.
Hee Won’s adaptation of Little Women is the first to be set in the present, and she did it in a way that still captivates the sisters’ initial struggles. Despite not being at war, they face serious poverty in the drama.
The Oh Sisters
The main difference is that the book tells us the story of the four March sisters, while the drama revolves around the three Oh sisters. There used to be four, but one of the Oh sisters passed as a baby.

The Greedy Two
In Joo, the oldest sister in the drama is supposed to resemble Meg March, the oldest sister in the novel.
The two have a similar mindset when it comes to money and both want to marry rich. Both have the same flaw, namely greed.
Untraditionally Righteous
In Kyung is the perfect counterpart of Jo March. Both are quite untraditional women who struggle with things that are not evident at first sight.
For example, In Kyung becomes an alcoholic. Although they face many struggles, they are both set on doing what is right and have the same morals.
Great Or Nothing
Amy March and In Hye are both the youngest sisters, making them fairly similar in terms of age.
Both sisters are hit the hardest by the poverty they experienced. They want to make a change for their family’s and are known for the famous catchphrase “I want to be great or nothing”.
