In Kim Min Hee’s case, being in a relationship did more harm than good.
The actress has been under fire for years for dating director Hong Sang Soo, who is 22 years older than her.
On top of that, he was a married man when they started seeing each other.
Min Hee is rarely spotted at public events ever since her relationship was revealed.
Recently, she was seen at the 70th San Sébastian Film Festival alongside Sang Soo.
He was invited because of his feature in the movie Walk Up.
Min Hee did not feature in the movie, but was mentioned as a production director.
Earlier this year the two were also seen at another festival for another movie of his, namely The Novelist’s Film.
The two started their scandalous relationship after Min Hee appeared in Right Now, Wrong Then in 2015.
In June of 2016 rumors emerged that she was having an affair with the director, who was married and had a child.
These rumors turned out to be true and Min Hee’s career was turned upside down in a matter of hours.
Min-hee made history at the 67th Berlin Film Festival by becoming the first Korean actress to win the Silver Bear for Best Actress.
However, her problematic relationship overshadowed her success and the public still was not all too happy with her.
At a press event for the 2017 film On the Beach at Night Alone Sang Soo made their relationship public.
Reportedly, his wife was aware the two were seeing each other, but refused to divorce him for the sake of their family.
Min Hee’s parents also knew what she had gotten herself into.
Allegedly, Min Hee’s mother had seen her arguing with Sang Soo’s wife.
In 2018 he filed for divorce, but the court denied his request.
He was the one that ruined his marriage, so the judge did not think it would be fair to grant him his wish.
The judge also stated that he has not done enough to make amends with his wife and daughter for hurting them so badly.
Ever since the relationship was made public, Min Hee has only starred in films directed by Sang Soo.
Ironically enough, most of his movies highlight themes of infidelity.
Because her reputation went down the drain, Min Hee’s agency dropped her and she lost many endorsement deals.
A cosmetics brand even went as far as to sue her for tarnishing their reputation.
She was on her way to international fame, but threw it all away for her relationship.
